The Best Lighting for Bathrooms with No Windows

Bathrooms are sometimes located in finished basements, attics and other locations where installing a large window isn’t practical. Unfortunately, bathrooms can look dull and dreary when there isn’t any natural light present. At Mr. Electric of Dallas, we provide premium residential and commercial electrical services including lighting upgrades, installations, repairs and replacements. Our licensed electricians enjoy helping local Dallas, Texas area home and business owners find ways to improve their indoor lighting systems, and we want to help you do the same. Here are some tips on how you can brighten up a windowless bathroom.

Types of Light Bulbs

The first task is to decide which kind of bulb you prefer. In the past, most homeowners had few options for bathroom light bulbs. Now, there are multiple styles available in stores for very affordable prices. While conventional incandescent bulbs are still on the shelves, shoppers can also find CFLs (compact florescent lights) and LEDs (light emitting diodes). Thanks to improvements in manufacturing and technology, the price and efficiency of LEDs are unmatched. Therefore, these are quickly becoming the most popular.

Brightness Level

LED bulbs are measured in lumens rather than traditional Watts. So, this can be a little confusing for those who are just now making the switch. A regular household bulb typically emits 800 lumens, but in a windowless bathroom with no other source of light, you’ll need something brighter. The total number of lumens should be around 2,000, so you may need to use a light fixture that accommodates three or more bulbs.

Color temperature is used to determine how cool or warm the light will be. This is measured in Kelvins, ranging from 2700K to 5000K. The lower the number, the warmer the hue. Since bathroom mirrors are often used for detailed tasks like shaving or makeup application, it’s best to have brighter lights near the vanity area, so opt for bulbs with a minimum of 3000K. If you want darker lights for your shower stall or soaking tub, then you can install additional light fixtures strategically, and use warmer lights or dimming bulbs to adjust the lights according to your mood.

Choosing a Bathroom Light Fixture

Aside from the bulbs themselves, the fixtures are also very important. Be sure to choose light fixtures that are designed for use in the bathroom. For example, pendant lights might work perfectly above your kitchen island, but would be impractical for bathroom use. Be sure to consider the overall style and design as well, to make sure it matches the rest of your décor.
