Installing Ceiling Fans on Cathedral Ceilings

Ceiling fans offer a lot of benefits for homeowners. They’re visually appealing, and provide extra comfort and temperature regulation for the busiest areas of the home. Unfortunately, many people with vaulted or cathedral ceilings suffer without a ceiling fan for years, because they’re uncertain about installing a fan on a slope. At Mr. Electric of Dallas, we provide a variety of residential and commercial services for local North Texas clients, including ceiling fan installation, repair and replacements. Installing a new fan in your cathedral ceilings doesn’t have to be a headache. Here are some tips on how you can enjoy the benefits of a beautiful new fan, even if you have tall or angled ceilings.

Installing a Fan with Existing Wiring

If your ceiling already has a light fixture in place, then installing a ceiling fan will be significantly easier, because the wiring and hardware will already be in place. A certified electrician can have your new ceiling fan install, but if you choose to take on this home improvement project yourself, then it’s vital that you ensure safety by turning off the power at your breaker box, and use appropriate safety gear when working. After you’re certain the flow of electricity has stopped, you can gather your supplies. You’ll need a drill, a ball mounting bracket for your ceiling, a down rod in the correct length and the new fan you wish to install. You’ll need to mount the ball bracket into the ceiling, attach the rod, and run the wiring through the cavity. Then, you can install the ceiling fan according to normal instructions, without worrying if the blades will hit your ceiling.

Tips for Installing Your New Ceiling Fan on a Sloped Ceiling

Down rods can be purchased in a variety of materials and lengths. Be sure to choose one that will match the fan you’ve chosen and that is the appropriate length. Measure the blades, so you know how far down from the ceiling your fan will need to be to avoid coming in contact with your ceiling or other fixtures. Also, keep in mind how tall your ceilings are, and how low you want the fan to be from the floor before making a final purchasing decision.
