How Electrical Panels Work

You may have seen the gray metal box positioned on the wall of your basement or garage but are not exactly sure what it is or how it works. Understanding the function of the electrical panel is important for property owners who want to properly maintain their circuits long term. At Mr. Electric of Dallas, we enjoy helping our clients find ways to improve the safety and efficiency of their electrical system and we would like to help you do the same. Here is some more information about how electrical panels work, and what you can do if your unit stops working properly.

What Is an Electrical Panel?

The electrical panel receives the main electrical load as it enters your home and disperses it safely throughout the various circuits. This provides just the right amount of energy to power your appliances, electrical outlets and light fixtures, without the need to worry about overloading your system. The electrical panel also provides a fast and effective way for the property owner to shut off all the electricity except the incoming power from your utility company. This task is essential for anyone who needs to perform an electrical installation, repair or replacement. It is also important for homeowners to familiarize themselves with the components of the electrical panel so they can restore power to circuits following a blackout or power surge.

A Glimpse Inside Your Service Panel

Inside your electrical panel you will find several switches, which are all assigned to a specific circuit inside your property. For instance, one circuit may control the power flowing to your kitchen, while another takes care of the electrical needs in the master bedroom. These switches should be labelled for fast identification. Each one of the neutral circuits is connected to a neutral bar inside the panel. These also connect to the main circuit neutral wire where the electrical current is sent safely back to the utility’s transformers.
